Frequently Asked Questions

How does Evodrop descaling work?

Evodrop uses its own patented malic acid for descaling, which is contained in granulate form in the filter cartridge. Thanks to the innovative ion sieve technology, Evodrop achieves a limescale protection rate of over 94% - without the use of salt, waste water or electricity. Unlike with seed crystals, swirlers or magnetizers, the limescale is not converted but completely filtered out of the water. The limescale is collected and processed in the filter cartridge.

The minerals calcium and magnesium bind to the malic acid and remain stable even when the water is heated to 200 degrees. This prevents limescale deposits from forming. Only 3 grams of malic acid are released per 1,000 liters of water. Malic acid is a natural, organic component of many fruits, especially apples, and is therefore completely neutral and tasteless.

In addition, the filtration material in the EVOdescale protects against corrosion by filtering heavy metals from the water and eliminating bacteria and viruses. It is important to emphasize that limescale is completely removed from the water so that no more limescale deposits can form.

A DVGW-accredited laboratory and the internationally renowned testing institute CTI have tested the Evodrop system and confirmed a limescale protection rate of over 94%. The filter performance was also verified by the world's largest testing company, SGS.

How is the water hardness changed?

Unlike salt systems, where the mineral ions (calcium and magnesium) are replaced by sodium ions, our technology works with natural malic acid.

This chemically stabilizes the minerals - they bind to malic acid, making them up to a hundred times more soluble in water.

This means they remain in the water but can no longer be deposited as limescale. The result is identical to soft water: no traces of limescale, protected appliances and a more pleasant feeling on the skin.

The household appliances are set to 13 °fH - as with a salt system - as the lime is completely neutralized.

However, conventional test strips show the same hardness, as they only react to free mineral ions - a clever marketing effect of classic softening providers.

Strictly speaking, the TDS value (total dissolved solids) remains the same - but the decisive factor is that the lime is bound and the water is soft.

How good are descaling systems without salt?

In summary, it can be said that alternative systems to conventional salt systems have unfortunately not worked satisfactorily to date. However, Evodrop takes a completely new approach, as it is the only alternative to salt systems that demonstrably removes limescale from the water - scientifically confirmed by an accredited DVGW laboratory.

Which is better a decalcification system without salt or a softening system with salt?

It is important to understand that there are a wide variety of providers on the market and that it is therefore difficult to give a general answer. Unfortunately, most alternatives to salt systems are not very satisfactory, even if they do have certain advantages for health and the environment - especially in view of the disadvantages of salt systems, which should not be underestimated.

The Thurgau Cantonal Laboratory, for example, points out the potential health risks that can arise from the use of salt plants. In addition, the regeneration process releases waste water containing salt and chloride, which - as numerous studies have shown - can cause considerable damage to bodies of water and ecosystems. The disposal of the exchange resin as hazardous waste also poses an environmental risk.

However, innovative solutions such as Evodrop offer a completely new approach: with the help of natural malic acid, which is contained in granulate form in the filter cartridge, a limescale protection rate of over 94% is achieved - without salt, waste water or electricity. Unlike with seed crystals, swirlers or magnetizers, the limescale is not converted but completely removed from the water.
The progress made by softening using malic acid makes it possible to leave harmlessly important minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, in the water.

Is salt released into the water in salt systems, ion exchangers, softening systems?

Yes, contrary to the claim made by some suppliers of water softeners that there is no salt in the water. This statement could be interpreted as sporting or ironic.

This is why it is referred to as softening. The softening process works through an ion exchange in which calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium ions. This allows sodium to enter the water.

Suppliers of water softeners often compare the addition of sodium with the salt content of a packet of chips. However, this overlooks the fact that people do not eat chips every day and that this comparison is misleading. It is similar to the argument for throwing PET bottles into lakes on the grounds that microplastics are already present there anyway.

Why is there scientific evidence of the dangers of salt from salt plants for humans, animals and the environment?

It is important to understand that although salt from salt plants is a natural product, it must be chemically processed.

Commercially available salt consists of at least 94 percent rock salt or table salt, i.e. sodium chloride (NaCl). However, it has no place on breakfast eggs - the salt in softening plants is denatured, i.e. made inedible by the addition of additives. In addition to natural additives such as clay, calcium or magnesium sulphate, iron or potassium ferricyanide is usually added to the salt as an anti-caking agent.

There is therefore no Himalayan salt or sea salt in the water softener with salt. It is salt with the following warnings on the packaging:

  • H412 - Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects
  • P102 - Keep out of the reach of children
  • P315 - Get medical advice/attention immediately
  • P101 - If medical advice is needed, have product container or label at hand
  • P410 - Protect from sunlight

Why does the water get worse with salt systems?

Results of the study "Bad water due to water softeners" by the Thurgau Cantonal Laboratory:

  • In 85 % of cases, contamination by bacteria & fungi doubled, legal limits often exceeded
  • High sodium content and bad taste of drinking water
  • High costs: Annual maintenance and salt consumption
--> Due to the health risk, chemical softening with salt is generally not recommended

  • 9524 Zuzwil SG // Water hardness: 37°f
  • up to 30°f: experts advise against softening with salt, limescale protection without chemicals recommended
  • Above 30°f: softening with salt only in exceptional cases, experts recommend first testing limescale protection without chemicals
